This is a complex intersection and configuration of the overhead will
change slightly so line poles in different locations will be needed and
some line poles in old locations will be removed without being replaced.

You mean like in this photo:
http://www.tgpg.us/haightpoles/9th_spools_091204.html
Very difficult to know what the extra spans are for -- don't know precise
location of the pole. Had the complete set of drawings for this
corridor so could look it up IF I can find same and if I know precise
location.
Also, turnouts are a more shallow angle and are further from the
intersection than before so poles are needed further from the
intersection. There is at least 1,500-pounds tension on this
overhead, possibly more since they are going to 4/0 on Haight itself and
you double that at turnouts since two sets of wires are coming together.
This is why a span is Always run from the turnout -- lead and trailing
-- to a line pole to keep tension.
This turnout http://www.tgpg.us/haightpoles/6switches_090804.html will be
an Advance placement turnout moved about 2-coach lengths east of the
intersection so there will be a double set of double wires heading
westbound. This is another reason line poles are installed where
none existed before. NOT NEEDED at this and most locations where
advance placement is used.
Advance placement of turnouts slows operations as the coach has to slow to
negotiate the turnout, use power to get to the intersection, then slow for
the intersection. With everything at the intersection we slow only
for the intersection! Additionally, with Right turn advance
placement the overhead goes over parked cars -- increases problems making
the turnout when a vehicle is double parked!
I talked them out of the advance placement on California westbound at
Walnut used by 3-Jackson as normal route -- turnout used to be almost
3-coach lengths east right in front of the driveway into the garage of the
JCC and into the Preschool -- double parked vehicles here all the time.
Much -- MucH -- MUCH -- M-U-C-H -- M--U--C--H BETTER WITHOUT
ADVANCE PLACEMENT TURNOUTS!
